Paying for Booking.com: what to know
- Check the rate's payment type: pay online now, pay online later or pay at the property. With pay at the property, the card only secures the booking and you're charged on arrival, so the funds need to be there by then.
- The property may verify your card with a pre-authorisation, temporarily blocking up to the full booking amount. It isn't a charge, but you can't use that money until it's released.
- At check-in many hotels hold anything from one night to the full stay plus 15–25% for extras. After check-out the hold usually clears within a few days, but your bank can take up to two weeks.
- Non-refundable rates and prepayments are charged right away and aren't returned if you cancel, so check the terms before entering your card.
- Don't freeze the card until the hotel has posted its final charge after check-out: minibar or tourist tax may be charged later.
If the payment fails
- Check the balance of the card itself, not the main balance in the bot: the charge goes to the card.
- Re-enter the number, expiry date and CVC: a typo is a common reason for a decline.
- Don't retry many times in a row: payment systems may temporarily decline frequent attempts. Wait and try again.
