Paying for DigitalOcean: what to know
- When you add a card, DigitalOcean sends a preauthorization request to the bank. The hold can show on your statement for up to 7 days without any money being taken, so keep a small buffer on the card.
- Before loading a large amount, link the card with a minimal balance and see whether DigitalOcean accepts it.
- Droplets are billed on usage, with the invoice covering the previous month. The cheapest Basic Droplet is $4/mo and the popular 1 GiB one is $6/mo.
- Linking PayPal triggers a $5 authorization, Google Pay and Apple Pay a $0 one. These verify the method and aren't payments.
- Taxes depend on the country in your profile; DigitalOcean has a separate taxes-by-country page worth checking before you pay.
If the payment fails
- Check the balance of the card itself, not the main balance in the bot: the charge goes to the card.
- Re-enter the number, expiry date and CVC: a typo is a common reason for a decline.
- Don't retry many times in a row: payment systems may temporarily decline frequent attempts. Wait and try again.
- Still not working? Message support at @VirtCardPaySupportbot and we'll sort it out.
FAQ
Will a virtual card work with DigitalOcean?
There's no guarantee: DigitalOcean officially says it doesn't accept virtual, Electron or prepaid cards. Test the link with a small balance before loading more.
Why is there a pending amount after adding the card?
It's a temporary preauthorization to check the card. DigitalOcean doesn't receive the money, and the hold drops off within 7 days.
When does DigitalOcean charge for a server?
Droplets are billed by usage, and the monthly invoice arrives at the start of the next month. Keep enough on the card to cover a month of usage.
How much do I need to put on the card?
At issue, from $30 / €30 goes straight onto the card. After that, top up from $30 / €30; the top-up fee is 4%. Keep the charge amount on the card plus a small margin.
Is it safe?
Only you see the card details — in the bot and your dashboard. 3-D Secure codes arrive in Telegram, and you can freeze the card in one tap.
