USDT (Tether) is the most common stablecoin in the crypto world. The idea is simple: one USDT token is always worth approximately $1. On price charts, it appears as an almost flat line, with occasional deviations of a fraction of a percent.

Where the Dollar Inside the Token Comes From

Tether Holdings issues USDT and promises that for every token issued, it holds an equivalent amount in dollars or similar assets. When you buy USDT, a dollar is placed in reserve. When you sell it back, the dollar is returned and the token is burned. In practice, this exchange is only available to large clients; retail users buy and sell USDT on exchanges.

This is a fiat-backed stablecoin — a stablecoin backed by real assets. The alternative is algorithmic stablecoins (which we saw in action with UST/Luna in 2022), but they have discredited themselves.

Why It's Useful in Practice

A safe haven in a volatile market. When Bitcoin drops 15% in a day, holding funds in USDT is a way to avoid that decline without withdrawing to fiat on an exchange.

Transferring money between countries. USDT via the Tron network (TRC-20) arrives in a minute with a fee of about $1. A SWIFT transfer takes 2-3 business days and costs $20-50.

Settlements with freelancers and counterparties. Especially when participants are in different countries with different payment systems — USDT simplifies the process.

What You Need to Understand

USDT is not a dollar. It is Tether's promise that they have a dollar. If Tether ever faces reserve problems (which are widely debated), the peg could break. Brief drops to $0.95 have occurred — for example, in March 2023 after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, where Circle held part of its reserves.

Second: USDT exists on several blockchain networks — Tron (TRC-20), Ethereum (ERC-20), BNB (BEP-20), Solana, Avalanche. It is the same token with different fees and speeds, but you must not confuse the networks: if you send USDT on the Tron network to an Ethereum wallet address, the token will be lost.
