USDT TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20: What's the Difference and Which Network to Choose

When you withdraw USDT from an exchange or send it to a counterparty, the exchange always asks: which network? And here confusion begins, especially for beginners. Is it the same token or different ones? Can you send from one network to another?

Technically Different Tokens

USDT TRC-20 lives on the Tron blockchain. USDT ERC-20 lives on Ethereum. USDT BEP-20 lives on BNB Smart Chain. These are technically different tokens on different blockchains, all issued by the same Tether. They cannot be transferred directly between each other: to convert TRC-20 to ERC-20, you either need to use an exchange as a bridge (deposit TRC-20, withdraw ERC-20) or a specialized bridge service.

Practical Comparison

TRC-20 (Tron). The most popular network for USDT in Asia and the CIS. Fee around $0.5–1, transfer within a minute. Supported by all major exchanges. Downside: the Tron network itself raises questions with regulators and goes through periods of increased scrutiny from the US OFAC.

ERC-20 (Ethereum). The oldest and most proven network for USDT. Fee depends on Ethereum congestion — on a bad day $10–30, on a calm day $3–5. Used more often when USDT is needed for DeFi operations.

BEP-20 (BNB Chain). Cheaper than Ethereum but more expensive than Tron. Fee around $0.3–0.5. Large DeFi ecosystem (PancakeSwap, etc.), but less institutional support.

Solana and Avalanche. Appeared later, fees below cents. Exchange support is weaker — not all major platforms credit USDT on these networks.

Which Network to Choose

Simply sending money to a person — TRC-20. If your counterparty uses an exchange, ask them: sometimes the exchange does not credit TRC-20 (e.g., Coinbase until recently).

Working with DeFi — ERC-20 or BEP-20 depending on which network the required service is on.

Withdrawal to a cold wallet — any network, as long as the wallet supports it. Trezor and Ledger support all three plus Solana and Avalanche.

Most Common Mistake

Sending USDT on the Tron network to an ERC-20 address (or vice versa). Tron addresses start with T (e.g., TXY...), Ethereum addresses start with 0x (e.g., 0xABC...). If you mix them up, the token goes where no one will credit it. In some cases, you can recover it through exchange support (if the address was an exchange address), but not always.
