Telesat, one of the largest satellite operators, released its Q2 2026 results. At first glance, it's a routine investor update. But beneath the surface are signals that matter for anyone using or considering satellite internet for travel or remote work.

The Numbers

Telesat's Q2 2026 revenue was $237 million, down 4.8% year-over-year. The decline is expected: some clients are reducing capacity purchases as the satellite market shifts. Net income came in at $57 million, a big improvement from last year's loss. The company continues to deleverage: debt stood at $2.3 billion at quarter-end, down $100 million from the start of the year.

The Big Bet: Lightspeed

Telesat's main growth driver is the Lightspeed low-earth-orbit satellite network, a direct competitor to Starlink and OneWeb. The company has already secured nearly $2.5 billion in pre-orders from major clients, including governments and telecom operators. The first satellite launch is scheduled for 2027, with commercial service expected in 2028.

What This Means for Us

If Lightspeed reaches the market, users will have another option for satellite internet. For frequent travelers and remote workers, that's a plus: more competition typically means lower prices and better terms. Meanwhile, satellite internet remains a niche product, and paying for it often requires a foreign card or cryptocurrency — a virtual card can come in handy here.

Bottom Line

Telesat isn't making money from Lightspeed yet, but it's building serious infrastructure. If launches go as planned, the satellite connectivity market could become much more interesting in a couple of years. For now, we'll keep an eye on developments and keep convenient payment methods for overseas services at hand.
