Emails from a bank, from a payment system, from service support are one of the most widespread compromise channels in 2026. Modern phishing uses AI to generate text, perfectly copies brand style, and often arrives exactly when you are actually expecting an email from your bank. A few simple checks eliminate 95% of the risk.

Sender Address – The First Thing to Check

Not the name in the From field – that can be anything – but the actual email address after the @ sign. To expand it in most email clients, click on the sender's name.

A real bank sends from its own domain: noreply@bank-name.com, support@bank-name.de. Phishing comes from a domain that looks similar to the original: bank-name-secure.com, bank-name.support-help.com, bank.name@gmail.com. If the domain does not exactly match what you know, it's phishing.

Links – Hover, Don't Click

The email usually contains a button like log in, confirm, verify. Do not click. Hover your cursor over it – in most email clients, the real link will appear at the bottom of the window or in a tooltip.

It should look like: https://bank-name.com/login. If it actually shows http://bank-secure-portal.net/redirect?session=... – don't even try to open it to check.

Urgency – A Red Flag

Phrases like your account will be blocked in 24 hours, urgent confirmation required, suspicious login detected are typical pressure tactics to make you click without thinking. A real bank, if it really needs something from you, will duplicate the notification via the app, SMS, and email. And it won't put you in a now or lose your money situation.

Requests for Data the Bank Already Knows

If the email asks you to enter your full card number, CVV, PIN code, password, or 12-word phrase – it's 100% phishing. A bank never asks you to enter this data because it already has it (except CVV and PIN, which it should not store at all).

What to Do If You Already Clicked

Do not enter your password. Close the tab. If you did enter it, go to the real bank website via your browser bookmark (not from history), change your password, and check your transactions. Contact the bank's support via the official phone number.

If you entered your card details, quickly block the card via the app. For most banks, blocking takes seconds.
