A new tool has arrived in the crypto payments ecosystem that could significantly simplify life for those sending or receiving stablecoins. The Python SDK for the x402 protocol has been updated to version 0.86.0 and now supports 29 networks — including native mainnets and testnets for Hedera, Circle Arc, Robinhood Chain, XRPL, Scroll, and SKALE.

What is x402 and why it matters

x402 is an open protocol for cryptocurrency payments that enables gasless transactions. The idea is simple: the user doesn't pay the network fee for a transfer; the service or application covers the operation. For those used to USDT transfers on TRC-20 with tiny fees, this isn't a revolution, but for networks like Ethereum, where gas can eat several dollars, it's a noticeable relief.

Multi-stablecoin and new networks

The SDK supports not only USDC but also other stablecoins. This means developers can integrate payment acceptance in USDT, USDC, and likely other assets without manually managing gas. Adding Hedera, XRPL, and Scroll expands the geography: now you can choose a network for the task — where speed matters, where fees matter, where compatibility with a specific wallet matters.

  • TRC-20 (Tron): low fees, high speed, but limited DeFi support.
  • ERC-20 (Ethereum): maximum compatibility, but gas can be expensive.
  • New networks (Hedera, XRPL, Scroll): a compromise between speed and cost, plus access to specific ecosystems.

ERC-8004 and escrow

The SDK now supports ERC-8004 Trustless Agents — a standard for autonomous agents that can make payments without trust. Escrow and refunds have also been added. In practice, this means services can more securely accept payment for subscriptions or one-time services, and users can get a refund guarantee if something goes wrong.

Gasless payments and escrow are a step toward making crypto convenient for everyday spending, not just speculation.

What it means for the average user

While this is a developer tool, the end effect is tangible: if your favorite service or store starts accepting USDT or USDC via x402, you can pay without needing to hold the network's native token for gas. This simplifies paying for foreign subscriptions and services, especially where cards don't work. And while VirtCardPay solves the problem differently — through virtual cards — such protocols expand the overall set of payment options.

Not investment advice. Cryptocurrencies are volatile, and fees and network availability can change.
