USDT has existed for 11 years, and over that time clear usage scenarios have emerged. It is not a uniformly distributed digital dollar for everyone: in reality, there are several major flows.

Cross-Border Transfers

The most common and underappreciated use case. Within the CIS, between Russia and Turkey, Georgia, UAE, Kazakhstan – USDT often replaces bank SWIFT transfers. Reasons: fiat transfers between countries have become slower and more expensive after 2022; USDT TRC-20 goes through in a minute with a fee of about $1.

The same applies in Latin America: Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil – countries with volatile currencies often use USDT as a way to preserve purchasing power and for cross-border transfers.

Freelancer Salaries

When a programmer or designer lives in one country but works for a company in another – PayPal, Wise, bank transfers turn out to be inconvenient, expensive, or politically problematic. USDT solves the issue: the company sends tokens, the freelancer converts to local currency as needed.

Many platforms (Deel, Remote) now support payments in USDC/USDT alongside traditional channels.

Trading on Crypto Exchanges

Within an exchange, USDT is the base trading currency: most pairs are traded against USDT, not USD. If a trader wants to exit a crypto position without converting to fiat (to avoid withdrawal fees and save time), they stay in USDT.

Therefore, volumes of USDT pairs on Binance/OKX/Bybit are typically 5–10 times higher than USD pairs on the same exchanges.

OTC Operations

Large deals (from $50,000 and above) often go through OTC – outside the order book, via special desk services. USDT is the standard in OTC because it is easy to transfer in large amounts without slippage.

Gray Zone

Part of USDT turnover involves operations on the edge of legality: sanctions evasion, settlements in sanctioned jurisdictions, sometimes money laundering. This is an objective part of the market. Regulators are responding: OFAC has several times demanded that Tether freeze specific addresses, and Tether has complied.

What Is NOT Typical

Retail payments in cafes and shops are rare. Although in a few countries (El Salvador, partially Turkey, UAE) there are pilots accepting USDT via POS, mass adoption has not occurred. USDT remains a tool for B2B and financial operations, not everyday spending.
