Prepaid and virtual are two different words that often describe the same thing. In reality, there is a difference, and sometimes it’s decisive.

What They Have in Common

Both cards are reloadable payment instruments. Both have a limit equal to the balance. Both usually do not offer credit. Both have their own BIN, which tells the merchant the card type.

What’s the Difference

Prepaid is a physical card with plastic, a chip, and sometimes a contact interface. You can carry it in your wallet and pay at a supermarket. It exists physically.

Virtual is a set of credentials: number, expiry date, CVV. No plastic. It works only online and in Apple Pay / Google Pay if the issuer supports tokenization.

In BIN ranges, virtual cards are often marked as exactly “virtual” – and services that filter by this field may accept prepaid but reject virtual. This is rare but occurs with some US utility services.

When Each Is Best

Virtual is ideal for subscriptions, SaaS, marketplaces, eSIM, gaming – anything where payment happens online and it makes sense to issue a card for a single purpose.

Prepaid (physical plastic) is needed in three situations: offline purchases, car rental with a deposit, and countries without widespread NFC acquiring. If your scenario doesn’t include these, virtual will suffice.

What Often Gets Overlooked

Apple Pay and Google Pay make a virtual card nearly equivalent to a physical one – the card token on your phone works on any NFC terminal. If your scenario involves paying in stores with a smartphone, prepaid plastic is not needed at all.

Exception: countries and scenarios where NFC is still rare – for example, a deposit at a guesthouse in Bali will most likely require physical plastic or cash.
