Apple ID and Google Play via Virtual Card: What You Need to Know

App stores are the first service for which many people get a virtual card: subscriptions to iCloud, YouTube Premium, games with subscriptions, in-app purchases. Linking does not always work on the first try, and the reasons differ between Apple and Google.

Apple ID

Apple ties the card strictly to the account region. If you have a US Apple ID, a card with a European BIN will most likely not link — even if the card holds US dollars. This is Apple's decision, not the bank's.

On the first link attempt, Apple usually places a temporary hold for a small amount (from $0 to $1, sometimes a bit more). If the card does not have even that amount, the link will fail. When topping up the card, it is better to set a limit with a couple of dollars extra for the first transaction.

Google Play

Google is more tolerant of the BIN region but stricter about the billing address. If the address in Google Pay is in one country and the card is issued in another, half of the transactions will go through additional checks, and some will not go through at all.

If you have multiple devices and Google accounts, check which address is attached to the Play account. You can change it only once a year, so it is worth specifying a country that matches the card's region right away.

When It Is Better to Use a Gift Card

For one-time purchases (a new game, unlocking a feature), an iTunes/Google Play gift card in local currency is often simpler: zero questions about region, zero BIN checks. For subscriptions, this option is inconvenient — the gift balance will run out at an inconvenient moment, and the subscription will lapse.

A universal rule: subscriptions via card, one-time purchases via gift balance. This eliminates a significant portion of linking problems.
