In the crypto community, the same scenario repeats daily with minimal variations. And it still catches people—not because they are careless, but because it's hard to keep a clear head when you're in trouble.
The Scenario
You posted in a public chat of an exchange, wallet, or DeFi protocol: "Can't withdraw USDT", "Deposit not arriving", "Transaction stuck". Within a minute, a support agent DMs you: "Hi, I'm a representative of Binance/MetaMask/Phantom, let's sort it out."
The account looks plausible: name Binance Support, logo avatar, bio says Official Support Agent, sometimes even a blue Premium checkmark. It may have a few followers and an old registration date.
Then the script unfolds: they ask about the problem, show empathy, offer to help. And at some point—a request to either connect your wallet to a verification link, enter your seed phrase, or send USDT to a checking address with a promise to return it.
Why People Fall for It
When you have a $5,000 deposit stuck, your emotions are running high. The helper speaks in a familiar tone, promises to fix it—and the logical thought "check if they're real" fades away. This is classic social engineering: create a situation where verification seems like an unnecessary step.
What Real Support Never Does
- Does not DM first. All real support for major services works through tickets, chatbots, and forms on the website. They don't reach out via DM with offers.
- Does not ask for your seed. Never. Not for verification, not for recovery, not for wallet check. Your seed is your wallet—whoever gets it, empties it.
- Does not ask you to send funds somewhere with a promise to return them. This is a basic rule: a bank, exchange, or any legitimate service never operates on a "send us money and we'll send it back" basis.
- Does not ask you to connect your wallet via a link from a DM. Any verification site or support portal sent in a DM is a drainer. Once you connect and sign a single transaction, your wallet is emptied.
How to Actually Contact Support
Every service has an official support channel. For Binance: support.binance.com and live chat within the app. For MetaMask: support.metamask.io. For crypto projects: often a Discord channel with verified roles.
Always go to the official website of the service (type it manually in your browser, not via a link from a chat) and find the support channel there.
If It Already Happened
If you entered your seed—it's over, your wallet is compromised, funds are gone within minutes. If you haven't confirmed yet—urgently transfer everything to a new wallet generated from scratch. Consider the old address lost.
