Telegram Account Security: A 5-Minute Checklist

Telegram is not just a messenger. It handles two-factor codes from some services, exchange support chats, and bot access tokens. A Telegram account takeover often leads to cascading loss of other services. Basic protection takes 5 minutes.

1. Enable Cloud Password (Two-Step Verification)

Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification → Set Additional Password.

This is a password required when logging in from a new device, in addition to the SMS code. Without it, only SMS protects your account; with it, a SIM-swap does not lead to account takeover.

Set an email recovery option so you can reset the password via email. The email account should also be protected with two-factor authentication—otherwise, the chain breaks.

2. Check Active Sessions

Settings → Devices → Active Sessions.

This lists all devices where your account is logged in. If you see an unfamiliar one, tap Terminate. Then immediately change your two-factor password, because an unknown session means someone has already logged in.

3. Limit Who Can See Your Phone Number

Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.

Set Who can see my phone number to Nobody, and Who can find me by my number to My Contacts. This reduces the chance of targeted attacks, including SIM-swap, for which the attacker needs your number.

4. Don't Trust "Support"

Telegram does not have personal support operators. All official channels are public bots (@SmsLoginBot, @SpamBot, @BotSupport). If someone messages you privately claiming to be from Telegram, it is always a scam.

Such a "support agent" will ask for the code you just received in Telegram—that is the final step of account takeover. Never share Telegram codes with anyone. Never.

5. Manage Auto-Delete and Account Self-Destruct

Telegram has auto-delete features for messages and the entire account. If the account is inactive for N months, it is automatically deleted. Settings → Privacy and Security → Account Self-Destruct.

Account deletion also removes all messages and group roles. If you have important groups or channels, remember to log in periodically, or extend the period to the maximum (1 year).

6. Sensitive Data in Secret Chats

Regular chats are encrypted on Telegram's server, but Telegram has access to the content. Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted, only between the two devices. For financial data, keys, and passwords, use Secret Chats.

What You Achieved

In 5 minutes, your account moves from "protected only by SMS" to "resistant to most mass attacks." Not perfect, but the attacker's entry barrier is significantly raised.
