In Bitcoin or Ethereum, every transaction is public — anyone can see it in a blockchain explorer. Privacy coins work the opposite way: amounts, sender, and recipient are cryptographically masked. This is useful for confidentiality but problematic for anti-money laundering efforts.

What Are These Coins

Monero (XMR) — the most well-known. It uses ring signatures, stealth addresses, and Bulletproofs to hide amounts. By default, every transaction is private.

Zcash (ZEC) — offers a choice: you can send via transparent or shielded addresses. In practice, only a minority of volume goes through shielded addresses — most users treat ZEC as a regular coin.

Dash — offers PrivateSend via CoinJoin (input mixing). Technically a proper privacy coin, but less strict than Monero.

Why Regulators Dislike Them

The FATF (Financial Action Task Force) standard — an international recommendation for anti-money laundering — requires service providers to identify the sender and recipient for large transfers (Travel Rule). With Monero, this is technically impossible: the transaction structure itself does not reveal participants.

As a result:

  • In the US, OFAC sanctioned Tornado Cash (an Ethereum mixer) — technically not a privacy coin, but similar logic.
  • Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, and most major exchanges have delisted Monero for users in the EU and UK.
  • Japan, South Korea, and Australia have banned XMR on regulated exchanges.

Where Monero Still Works

Small unregulated exchanges (no KYC) — but this comes with its own risks: blocks, bankruptcies, lack of protection. Atomic swaps between XMR and BTC directly — technically works, but requires preparation.

Should You Hold It

For everyday privacy — it's overkill. A payment card or cash is more private than a blockchain transaction visible in real time.

For technological interest or supporting cryptographic development — it's one of the most interesting projects in the industry. But realistically assess: liquidity is falling, fiat on/off ramps are getting harder, and regulatory pressure will increase.
