Meme tokens are a part of crypto that isn't going away. Sometimes they do 10x, sometimes they become an empty contract within a day. Between these outcomes, there are verifiable signs that anyone can check before buying.

Minimum Checks to Perform

Liquidity locked. If liquidity can be withdrawn from the pool by the creator, it's a so-called rug. Check on dexscreener.com, dextools.io in the token card: is there a record of liquidity locked and for how long? Without locked liquidity, there's no point in buying.

Holder distribution. On Etherscan/BscScan in the Holders section, see what percentage of the token is held by the top 10 wallets. If 1-2 wallets hold more than 30%, a single seller can move the price significantly. If the top 10 holds more than 70%, it's almost certainly manipulation.

Contract not renounced or contains mint(). The creator may retain the ability to mint new tokens or blacklist wallets. If the contract is not renounced (or ownership not burned), the creator can change the rules at any time. Renounce ownership = ownership transferred to the 0x0000... address.

What Usually Goes Unchecked (But Shouldn't)

Pair age. If the token launched an hour ago, 95% of the volume is from the creators and pump bots. Wait a day or two, and you'll see the real distribution and real volume.

Tax (fee) on buy and sell. Sometimes buy tax is 5%, sell tax is 30% — meaning exiting a position is almost unprofitable. Check via a test wallet or on honeypot.is.

What Usually Doesn't Help

Influence from Telegram channels and Twitter influencers is not a signal of token quality, but a signal of attention concentration. They receive the same token much cheaper than they sell recommendations. Taking influencer pump as fundamental is one of the most expensive ways to lose money.

Quick Rule

If you're not prepared to lose the entire amount, don't go into memecoins. If you are, only invest a percentage of your portfolio that you can truly afford to write off.
