The FDA has launched the TEMPO pilot program, which allows certain AI-powered medical devices to reach the market faster, without the standard premarket review. Four devices are already on the list, including an AI voice agent that conducts talk therapy for Medicare patients. This is the first time such a tool works with real patients before the FDA formally evaluates its effectiveness.
What is TEMPO and why it matters
TEMPO (Timely Evaluation of Precise Medical Products and Opportunities) is an FDA pilot project launched in 2025. Its goal is to accelerate the market entry of innovative AI-based devices, especially those classified as "software as a medical device" (SaMD). Under TEMPO, manufacturers can access real-world data and interact with the regulator more flexibly, but without full premarket approval.
Currently, there are four devices in the TEMPO list, and one of them is a voice agent for psychotherapy. In essence, it's a program that talks to the patient by voice, helping them work through anxiety, depression, and other conditions. Medicare patients can already use it under their insurance, even though the FDA hasn't yet confirmed that it actually works.
What this means in practice
For the average person, this is a signal: AI is increasingly entering medicine, and regulators are looking for ways to keep up with technology. For now, the TEMPO program only applies to the US market and Medicare, but the trend is clear: AI services will appear faster than before, and this applies not only to medicine but also to finance, education, and entertainment.
If you plan to pay for such foreign services—whether telemedicine, AI assistants, or mental health app subscriptions—it's worth remembering payment methods. Many such platforms only accept cards from international payment systems, and not all Russian bank cards are suitable. Virtual cards, including those funded with cryptocurrency, can be a convenient solution: they allow you to pay in dollars or euros without extra conversions or blocks.
What's next?
The FDA will continue to monitor the devices under TEMPO and collect data on their safety and effectiveness. If the pilot proves successful, such accelerated procedures could extend to other device categories. For users, this means innovation will arrive faster, but the risk of encountering an immature product also grows.
For now, the AI therapist is an experiment, but it shows where the market is heading. And if you want to be among the first to try new services, take care of a reliable payment method in advance—it removes one barrier to new technologies.
