How to Check a Card BIN Before Making an Important Payment

BIN (Bank Identification Number) refers to the first 6 digits of a card number. Merchants use it to identify the issuer, country of issue, and card type (virtual/physical). Sometimes, certain BINs are blocked. For example, many US services do not accept cards from CIS countries; some subscription services block known virtual card BINs.

Why Check

Before paying for an expensive annual subscription or booking a $500 hotel, it's wise to confirm that the merchant accepts your BIN. Otherwise, you may face a payment refusal or, worse, a payment with a hold that is later released (but your funds are locked in the meantime).

Where to Check

BIN-checker websites. bincheck.io, bindb.com, neutrinoapi.com – enter the first 6-8 digits of your card to get information: issuing bank, country, card type.

Important: this check does not deduct any money; it's simply a lookup against a public database.

Test payment of $1. If the merchant (or a similar merchant) has a payment page, try entering your card details for a minimal amount. If the merchant responds with "card not accepted" during authorization, you know the BIN is blocked.

What Is Usually Not Accepted

Virtual cards from well-known mass BINs. Some advertising services (especially Meta Ads on new accounts), certain premium subscriptions, and dating service subscriptions block BINs that have been associated with fraudulent transactions from many different customers.

BINs from sanctioned or high-risk countries. US services and some European ones block cards issued in countries subject to restrictions.

Prepaid cards for hotels and car rentals. These merchants perform pre-authorization (large holds) and often require a credit card, not prepaid/debit. A virtual card is usually classified as debit or prepaid.

What to Do If Your BIN Is Not Accepted

Issue a new card in VirtCardPay. Possibly with a different BIN. The service may offer multiple BINs for different scenarios.

Use a workaround. For example, for Booking.com, you can book through Russian alternatives that then pay the hotel via their own acquiring. These are rare cases but sometimes work.

Apple Pay / Google Pay. Sometimes a merchant blocks direct virtual card payments but accepts Apple Pay. The merchant's logic is opaque, but this workaround exists.

Keep Track of Successful BINs

If you have multiple cards, remember which one works on which service. Over time, you'll build an internal compatibility matrix, and for future purchases you'll immediately choose the right card.
