Virtual Card Expired During a Subscription: What Happens Next

The expiration date of any card, including a virtual one, indicates not when the card will be deleted, but until which date transactions can be made using these details. After expiration, the service continues to attempt charges, but an "expired card" error is returned.

What the Service Typically Does

Three possible behaviors:

• Account updater (Visa/Mastercard). If the card issuer is enrolled in this service, updated details are automatically sent to the merchant, and the subscription continues without your intervention. This does not work everywhere and is more common with established brands: Netflix, Spotify, Apple, Adobe.
• Email requesting card update. Most services send a warning 7–14 days before expiration and ask you to log into your account. If you update the card, the subscription continues uninterrupted.
• Silent block. A less common scenario: the subscription simply stops working. Access to features disappears without notice because the service assumes the customer has left.

What to Do in Advance

The most convenient approach is to check your card's expiration date and set a reminder one month earlier. With a month's notice, you can calmly issue a new virtual card, update it in key services, and not rely on someone else's account updater.

Not all issuers provide a new card with the same details after expiration—usually both the number and CVV change. This is normal: it reduces the chance that a forgotten service will continue charging after the old card expires.

If the Subscription Is Critical

For subscriptions where even a few days without access is a problem (e.g., work SaaS, education with deadlines), it's useful to keep a backup card with a longer validity period as a fallback in the merchant's settings. Many services allow adding multiple payment methods and will automatically select a working one if the first fails.
