Ethereum Gas Fees: What You Pay For and How to Pay Less

When a beginner sees that sending $50 in USDT via Ethereum can cost $20 in fees, the first reaction is something is broken. It's not broken. This is how Ethereum works: gas is paid for computational work, not the transfer amount. Here are a few practical things about gas.

What Makes Up the Fee

Gas fee = gas used × gas price. The first multiplier depends on the operation type: a simple ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas, an ERC-20 transfer about 65,000, and a complex DEX swap 150,000–300,000. The second multiplier (gas price in gwei) changes every minute: the more people sending transactions, the higher the price.

After the London Hard Fork (EIP-1559), the fee is split into a base fee (burned) and a tip (goes to the validator). This made fees more predictable but not cheaper.

When the Network Is Expensive

Gas price spikes occur with new ICOs, popular NFT mints, major market moves, or listings of popular tokens. If you need to transfer something and are not in a hurry, check current network load via etherscan.io/gastracker or etherchain.org, and wait for low values (usually at night UTC).

How to Pay Less

L2 networks. Arbitrum, Base, Optimism — the same ERC-20 tokens but fees are tens of times lower. Most centralized exchanges support withdrawal/deposit in these networks. This is the most direct way to reduce costs.

USDT via TRC-20. If the goal is simply to send USDT, the Tron network is almost always cheaper and faster. Most wallets and exchanges support TRC-20. The downside is a smaller DeFi ecosystem, but for a simple transfer that's not needed.

Choose medium priority instead of fast. When sending, the wallet offers a fee level. If time is not critical, medium almost always saves 20–40%, and the transaction will still go through within minutes.

What Won't Save You Money

Setting the gas price manually below the minimum is pointless — the transaction will hang in the mempool and eventually be canceled, wasting both money and time. If you want to reduce fees, use L2 or another network instead of tweaking parameters.
