DCC - Dynamic Currency Conversion. This service offers to pay with your card in its home currency instead of the merchant's currency. On the POS terminal screen or payment form, a button "Pay in USD" appears next to "Pay in EUR". It seems convenient - but in reality, it's almost always disadvantageous.
Why DCC Is More Expensive
When you choose to pay in USD, the conversion is done by the merchant's bank - not your bank. It uses its own rate with a built-in margin. This is usually 4-7% above the interbank rate.
If you choose "Pay in EUR" (the merchant's original currency), the conversion is done by your issuer. Most payment systems use the Visa/Mastercard rate, which is close to the interbank rate - 0.3-1% above it.
The difference of 3-6% is unnoticeable on $10, but critical on a $1,500 hotel bill.
Where DCC Is Encountered
Physical terminals - especially in tourist areas (hotels, restaurants in Greece, Italy, Turkey, Dubai). The cashier actively offers "pay in your currency, it's easier". Sometimes they don't even ask.
Online - less common, but occurs with US hotels and some OTAs. Bookers (booking.com, expedia) usually default to the merchant's currency, but when booking in dollars, they may enable DCC.
How to Avoid
At POS - definitely decline DCC. If the cashier has already confirmed "pay in your currency", you can cancel the transaction and do it again.
In online services - check the final amount page to see which currency is displayed. If your card is in dollars and the amount is shown in dollars with a note like "converted from EUR at our rate" - that's DCC. Better to switch the interface language/region or look for an option to "pay in original currency".
When DCC Is Still Beneficial
In one case: if your card has a huge currency conversion fee (e.g., 5-10% from some banks), and the merchant's DCC is 3%. Then DCC is the lesser of two evils. For normal issuers, conversion should be within 1-2% - DCC definitely loses to that.
