Centralized exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, OKX, Bybit) and decentralized exchanges (Uniswap, Curve, PancakeSwap) are not the same thing—they are different tools for different tasks. Beginners are the ones who usually confuse them.

The Core Difference

On a CEX, you hand over your crypto to the exchange, and it holds it in its own wallets. Trading occurs between user balances in the exchange's database, without on-chain transactions. This is fast, cheap, and convenient—but if the exchange goes down, your funds are stuck in its bankruptcy. The FTX story demonstrated this clearly.

On a DEX, you trade directly from your wallet via a smart contract. No one holds your money except you. The downsides are network fees (especially expensive on Ethereum), slippage on low-liquidity pairs, and full responsibility for every click.

Where CEX Usually Excels

Buying crypto with a bank card or SEPA transfer almost always goes through a CEX. Only centralized exchanges have licenses to work with fiat. Coinbase, Kraken, and Bitstamp are options for verified users in the EU/US.

High-liquidity trading is also better on a CEX. The order book provides prices closer to market rates than the AMM (pool formula) on Uniswap for large volumes.

Where DEX Usually Excels

New tokens that haven't yet been listed on CEXs trade almost exclusively on Uniswap or its equivalents. If you want to catch a token early, a DEX is the only option.

Contactless cross-chain swaps are also more common on DEXs or via bridge aggregators. CEXs typically require a multi-step process: withdraw, convert, withdraw again.

Where to Hold

Long-term holding should not be on an exchange. This rule has been in place since the industry's inception. CEXs are for active trading and fiat operations; for storage, use your own wallet (hot wallet for active use, cold wallet for the bulk of your funds). This follows the same logic as a bank account: treat it as a wallet, not a safe.
