In the search results of Booking, Agoda, Hotels.com, there is a filter for no prepayment. At first glance, it's ideal: you book and pay upon check-in. In reality, there are details that determine what will happen.

What Does No Prepayment Mean?

Booking is made without charging funds. However, a card is still required as a guarantee. The platform transmits the card data to the hotel, and upon the occurrence of one of the following events, the amount may be charged from the card:

  • No-show. You didn't arrive on the check-in date without cancellation. The hotel charges the first night (or more, depending on the policy).
  • Late cancellation. Some tariffs allow cancellation 24-72 hours before check-in. If you cancel later, a penalty applies.
  • Non-payment at the hotel. Upon checkout, if you didn't pay with cash, the amount will be charged from the card.

Card Limit for Guarantee

This is a key point. Many think: since there's no prepayment, I can book with an empty card. That's not true. When Booking reserves your booking, the platform performs a mini-authorization (often $1-5) to verify the card's validity. If the card is empty or the limit is too low, the booking is not accepted.

At minimum, the card should have an amount equal to the no-show penalty (usually the first night). Better yet, the entire booking cost plus 10-20%, in case plans change.

Refundable vs Non-refundable

For the same hotel, there are often two tariffs:

  • Refundable. You can cancel by a certain date without penalty. It costs 10-20% more than non-refundable.
  • Non-refundable. Cheaper, but in case of cancellation, the penalty is 100% (or a large portion).

Refundable is the right choice if plans may change. The extra 10-20% for flexibility is often worth it.

What to Choose with a Virtual Card

Several working scenarios:

Refundable with an empty card. Doesn't work. Booking will reject the booking because the card won't pass the authorization check.

Refundable with a card that has the first night's amount. Works. If you don't show up without canceling, they charge the first night; no other losses.

Refundable with a card that has the full amount. Works. Upon check-in, the hotel often places a hold (pre-authorization). If plans change, cancel before the deadline; nothing is charged, and the hold is released within 5-14 days.

Non-refundable. The card must cover the full amount; it will be charged immediately.

What Is Often Overlooked

Card expiration date. If the card expires before the check-in date, the booking may be canceled. Check that the expiration date covers the stay period.

Replacing the card after booking. In your Booking account, you can update the card. If your virtual card has expired or been closed, provide a new one before the check-in date.

City taxes. Often paid separately, in cash at check-in (€1-5/night in Europe). This is on top of the booking cost.
