Block, Jack Dorsey's fintech company, has joined the x402 Foundation, an organization promoting an open standard for agentic payments. Steve Reis, head of product at Block Financial Platform, announced the move in a corporate blog post on Thursday, September 24.
What is x402 and why it matters
x402 is an open standard that enables AI agents to initiate and execute payments autonomously. In simple terms, it allows software to pay for services, data, or compute without manual confirmation each time.
Block joins the foundation as a member, bringing its expertise in payment infrastructure. The goal is to make agentic payments interoperable and predictable for all market participants.
Why virtual card holders should care
If AI agents start making purchases and subscriptions at scale, demand will grow for payment tools that are easy to issue, fund, and control. Virtual cards and stablecoins are a natural fit: they can be linked to an agent, capped with limits, and revoked quickly if needed.
The standard is still taking shape, but involvement from players like Block accelerates adoption. For users, this could eventually mean simpler payments for foreign services through automated workflows.
What's next
Block will participate in developing specifications and is likely to test x402 in its products. Those working with crypto payments and financial automation should keep an eye on the foundation's updates.
